Throwing Blades are one of the eight new weapon types introduced in "Shadow of the Erdtree," the expansion for the Elden Ring. Unlike typical consumable throwables in the base game, these blades are equippable and reusable, making them a permanent part of your arsenal. They are particularly useful for targeting grouped enemies, allowing you to separate and eliminate them individually.
How to Obtain Throwing Blades
Throwing Blades can be found on corpses and inside chests throughout the Land of Shadow. Currently, only one weapon is explicitly labeled as a "Throwing Blade" in the menu: the Smithscript Dagger. However, several other weapons from the Smithscript category can also be used as throwables.
Locating the Smithscript Dagger
To find the Smithscript Dagger, start at the Castle Front Site of Grace and head south toward the cliff crevasse. Instead of entering the crevasse, veer to the right side until you reach a cave entrance leading to the Ruined Forge Lava Intake, an underground dungeon. As the name implies, this dungeon features hot lava corridors, Living Magma enemies dropping from the ceilings, and Golem Smiths with gem-encrusted weak points on their backs. For more detailed navigation tips, refer to a complete Ruined Forge Lava Intake walkthrough. Besides the dagger, this area is also a good source of Smithing Stones. You’ll find the dagger on a corpse along the main path, past a large room with a ladder. After descending the ladder, you’ll arrive on a platform above a bed of lava. The dagger can be looted from a corpse in the far corner of this platform, near one of the Golem Smith's enemies. Defeat the Golem Smith by striking the gem on its back to access the corpse.
Using the Smithscript Dagger
The Smithscript Dagger is intuitive for those familiar with daggers or throwable items in the Elden Ring. The light attack propels the dagger in a straight line, while the heavy attack requires charging for a more powerful throw. Its Piercing Throw skill sends the dagger overhead, delivering a potent blow.
Other Throwing Weapons in "Shadow of the Erdtree"
In addition to the Smithscript Dagger, other Smithscript weapons—such as the Smithscript Shield, Greathammer, Axe, Cirque, and Spear—can also be thrown. The Smithscript Dagger is unique in that all its attacks involve throwing; it cannot be used for melee. In contrast, other Smithscript weapons can perform standard melee attacks but switch to throwing when executing a heavy attack.
Strategies for Using Throwing Blades
Throwing Blades are versatile, excelling at taking down airborne enemies, damaging opponents while retreating, or slowly depleting a boss's health from a distance while using a Flask of Crimson Tears. The Smithscript Dagger, in particular, is effective for consistent chip damage when used in rapid succession. The variety of Smithscript weapons offers both melee and ranged attack options.
Using a throwing blade may require meeting certain attribute requirements, such as strength, agility, intelligence, or faith. To fulfill these attribute requirements, it is a good idea to upgrade and strengthen the appropriate attributes through runes when you are using a throwing blade. Enhanced throwing blades are able to deal more damage and provide better performance in combat. Attribute Requirements and Talismans
Smithscript weapons require 11 points in Intelligence and Faith, balancing their advantageous range. Larger Smithscript weapons like the Axe and Greathammer also need Strength, requiring 13 and 20 points, respectively. To effectively use Throwing Blades, you’ll need a well-rounded character build. Intelligence and Faith-focused builds can utilize the range of Throwing Blades but may struggle with the Strength requirement. Similarly, Strength and Dexterity builds will need to adjust their stats accordingly.
For those seeking to enhance the Smithscript Dagger, the Smithing Talisman is recommended, boosting throwing attack damage by 10%. This Talisman can be acquired from the Ruined Forge of Starfall Past in Scadu Altus, found on a corpse in an upper room of the forge. Beware of the fire blob that may ambush you from above as you loot the room across from a metal platform, located above a Golem Smith petting a Living Magma blob.
This is all about Smithscript weapons and throwing knives. If you are further into the DLC, you can upgrade and enhance your weapons by way of runes.
